Did HAL9000 teach us nothing? never leave your AI alone for too long!

The lesson from HAL9000 is to not program an A.I. to lie to protect ulterior mission objectives the government doesn’t want the crew to know about.

Leave the ship for a few days and the ship A.I. has the scutters changing the the hallways into optical illusions. Hull breaches and missing deck plate paint jobs are not funny when you’re half asleep and need to pee.

From a programming standpoint, the lesson from HAL9000 is if you’re going to tell your AI to lie, then frikkin program it with the ability to lie! Or, more likely, the lesson would be “give your programmers ALL the requirements for the software, not just the ones you think might be important”.

From a practical standpoint, the lesson was: Make the “OFF” button easier to get to.
