    Probably would have been safer to clamp it to the hull. Dangling it behind your ship is a good way to slag it down or irradiate it with the main drive, and it presents a far-greater issue when maneuvering due to the angular momentum from that long tether. You can also run a docking tube to the mech’s hatch if you clamp it, making boarding and debarking a lot easier and safer.

      All true. This series (like many of the old stories it salutes) violates Real Science in more than this.
