Problem is, due to The Law of Conservation of Ninjitsu, he’s only really badass when he’s by himself. Once he’s part of the group, he’s just the sword guy.

Can a lone samurai ever really be part of a group?

As long as the group is no larger than seven.

For an epic quest you need seven companions, one of them can’t be fully trusted.

            Or is a doppelganger?

Despite the short range of the sword, it doesn’t need ammo and even a broken sword can be used to kill. Impressive as firearms are, once the ammo is gone or the power source is drained, they become little more that fancy clubs.

My 91/30 when out of ammo is no mere club, it becomes on par with the devastating pointed stick.

If videogames tell me anything, you can only hold like 6 shots for that thing in your pack and more is really, really scarce.

Perhaps, but in fiction, a gun never runs out of ammo until the plot needs it to, no matter how many bullets might actually have been in that clip. In particular, fully automatic weapons can often be fired nearly continuously for several minutes or even longer with out ever running out of ammo or having to reload. By that time, you’ve already killed all 500 of the guys with swords.

(Well, except maybe that last one, but how dangerous could he be all by himself?)

He can be quite devastating for several moments, provided he’s a cut above the rest.

Have you guys ever browsed around http://tvtropes.org/? There are so many tropes out there. Lots of things I didn’t even realize were tropes. Those you listed are totally there. Someone actually created a page for us over there. Some of these items I hadn’t even recognized as tropes when writing them. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Webcomic/DaxComics

For shame! You should know better than to just link to tvtropes directly without warning people first! Tvtropes is a fiendishly devious time sink of the first magnitude. People have been known to get lost in there for hours or even days at a time, unable to escape the gravitational pull of that insatiable need to click just one more link! Some have even disappeared entirely, never to be seen again! I suspect that it’s some sort of ancient eldritch Lovecraftian abomination just masquerading as a web site until such time as it feeds off of its users life energy enough to fully manifest. It’s possible I may be overestimating it a bit, but you never know.

For real! I felt the same way when I first discovered wikipedia 😀
